June 17th to August 9th, 7:30am to 6pm Summer camp is offered for children ages 6—13 at Emmett Scott Center, 801 Crawford Road. Camp will include trips, lunches, snacks, and a camp t-shirt. Summer Art Camps with the Arts Council June 10th to July 12th Children ages six and up can be actors, sculptors, painters, dancers, or jewelry-makers during these art camps. National Bike Month Events: * May 12th: Mother’s Day Sweet Treat Ride, 2pm to 4pm. Six-mile ride from Glencairn Garden to Manchester Village and back. Helmets required. * May 15th: Ride of Silence, 7pm. Ten-mile ride beginning at Wells Fargo Parking Lot on Main Street to honor those who have been hurt or killed while cycling on public roads. Old Town Market is Rock Hill’s only all-local farmers market featuring fresh seasonal produce, pastured meats, local honey, baked goods, plants, and more. There are also handmade works by local artisans such as pottery, jewelry, woodturned bowls, soaps, hairbows, aprons, and rugs. Old Town Market will be held in its newly-constructed location at 115 Caldwell Street (parking entrance on E. White Street), next to Millstone Pizza and Taphouse. The Vault, Rock Hill’s only basement bar, opened in 2012. It is a full-service bar featuring a variety of beers on tap, as well as an extensive bourbon and scotch selection. The Vault is a comfortable space with a lounge area, flat-screen TVs, dart boards, a foosball table, and a juke box. Happy Hour specials are often offered in the early evening hours, and live music is scheduled regularly. The Vault is open every Monday through Saturday from 4pm to 2am. Old Town Market to Open in New Location

Free children’s activities are also offered at every market. Old Town Market will open for its fourth season on May 9th from 5pm to 8pm. This year, the market will be held in its newly—constructed, permanent location at 115 Caldwell Street, which is beside Millstone Pizza and Taphouse; and the Old Town Market Hall. During select markets, vendors will be located inside the Old Town Market Hall, as well as outside in the new Old Town Market space.

Childhood friends Brendan Kuhlkin and David Clapp are the team behind the project. After deciding to bring New York quality Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas to Rock Hill, along with an extensive selection of craft beers, they traveled around New York and Chicago to sample the best of the best. Upon returning, they incorporated elements of their favorite pizzerias into what is now Millstone Pizza and Taphouse.

Project Sparrow Collecting Gift Cards for Those in Need

For the past two years, Project Sparrow has been assisting local individuals and families by providing food for them in their time of need. This volunteer-run project also hosts “Family Smiles Parties,” where families in need of assistance are invited to enjoy food, music, and children’s activities at no cost to them.

Holly Glasscock, local artist, studied advertising and graphic design at Winthrop University but is largely self-taught in the fine arts. She developed her skills by studying with artists from the American Academy of Equine Art and by participating in several workshops led by a variety of artists. She maintains a studio in Rock Hill and seeks to create works that celebrate life and that inspire, challenge, and motivate others to pursue their passions.

Entries are being accepted for the 2013 Glimpses of Glencairn Photography Competetion from now until May 3rd. Photographers of all levels are invited to participate in this year’s competition. Categories are: Blooms, Water, Wildlife, and Other. Photos must have been taken at Glencairn Garden within the last two years. Winners will be announced at BloomFest. The Old Town Market Hall, Old Town’s newest event venue, is ideal for hosting parties, wedding receptions, meetings, reunions, concerts, art shows, and more. Owned by Main 7 LLC and managed by Rinehart Property Management, the building at 121 Caldwell Street has been completely renovated through a partnership with the City of Rock Hill. This building was once known as the Dixie Home Store of Rock Hill and, later, as a dry cleaner and shoe repair shop. Now, it is a venue designed to bring more events into the heart of the community. The Old Town Market Hall is a 3,100 sq. ft. space with a 24-ft. high redwood ceiling, a skylight, brick walls, bow-truss beams, and oversized doors to allow events to spill outside.

Business Spotlight: Main Street Children's Museum

Main Street Children’s Museum opened in Old Town just over two years ago. Featuring exhibits inspired by the late Vernon Grant’s whimsical artwork, the museum is a place where families can make memories while engaging their young children in fun, developmental play. Three weekly ongoing programs at the museum provide additional creative learning opportunities. On the Second Saturday of each month at 9:15am, children can enjoy seasonal stories and crafts. Wednesdays are Wee Wednesdays. On these days, beginning at 10:30am, children ages three and younger, and their caregivers, can enjoy listening to stories, moving to music, and creating crafts. Every Friday, all day, is I Spy Friday. Children ages three to six can explore the museum with their caregivers on a self-guided scavenger hunt. These special activities are included with museum admission, and registration is not required.

Business Spotlight: The Love Shack

The Love Shack, which opened in August, is Old Town’s newest local barber shop. While named after owner Jon Love, the name is also reminiscent of the B-52’s song “The Love Shack,” which was released in 1989. Similar to the message of the song, Love wants people to have fun and be happy while having their hair cut. He and manager, Susan Averitt, really enjoy being around people and having the opportunity to personally get to know their customers. Both Love and Averitt are Master Barbers who have been hairstylists for more than 13 years. After years of working together for another barber shop in Charlotte, they decided to open their own shop here in Rock Hill. They chose their location in Old Town because they wanted to be in a visible spot that was close to both Winthrop University and to a national brand store—Earth Fare, in this case.

A Place at the Table: Creativity in Food and Togetherness

On January 18th and 19th, Friday Arts Project will host A Place at the Table: Creativity in Food and Togetherness. This special forum will focus on community, goodness, and the mysterious bonding that occurs around the table. It will include several meals; a screening of “The Man Who Ate New Orleans,” a film by Michael Dunaway; “Coming Home,” an exhibition of photographs by Friday Arts Project member Cameron Bunce; and a Pop-Up Magazine dinner event. In addition, a special Meet and Greet with local farmers will be held in the new Old Town Market Hall at 121 Caldwell Street. Several renowned speakers will also be featured during this forum.

Vernon Grant's Santas

During the month of December, the Arts Council of York County’s Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts will be filled with holiday illustrations by Vernon Grant. Grant was a Rock Hill native who became a renowned artist. In addition to creating the Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies Snap!®, Crackle!® and Pop!® characters, he created numerous Santa illustrations.
