COMING HOME: Reentry After Incarceration Collaborative Photo-Essay Documentary Exhibit

ROCK HILL, SC – COMING HOME: Reentry After Incarceration is a collaborative photo-essay documentary exhibit, featuring the photographs of Errol Daniels and writings of Katherine Russell. This unique exhibition seeks to humanize the criminal justice statistics and to portray the challenges of post-incarceration life through the written word and photographs, ultimately recalibrating what the public sees in those who are returning from prison.

Exhibit Location: Center for the Arts | Dalton Gallery, 121 East Main St., Rock Hill, SC

Exhibit Dates: June 15 – July 15, 2018

By personalizing the stories of the individuals as they re-enter society after time spent in jail or prison, Daniels and Russell hope to encourage others to remove barriers that lead to recidivism and to shift the tone toward restorative, rehabilitative approaches. COMING HOME seeks to shift the public perception of those who are returning from prison by peeling away the labels unforgivingly affixed to former offenders, and shares human images that defy these stereotypes. In many respects, ordinary onlookers may see themselves in this group of former offenders, but the subjects’ stories of overcoming their past are extraordinary.

Daniels and Russell followed each of their twenty-three subjects to document their return to their communities in western New York, Washington, D.C., and New York City from November 2016 – February 2018. The essays that accompany the images contain a range of reflections on reuniting with family, making changes inside and outside of prison, finding and retaining work, coping with traumas from childhood and imprisonment, addressing the effects of institutionalization, and shedding the stigma of being an “ex-prisoner.”
