Annual Literary Competitions - Call for Entries Poetry & Short Story | Youth & Adult

ROCK HILL, SC – The Arts Council of York County presents its 14th Annual Literary Competition, highlighting the best in short stories and poetry from across the Southeast United States; and the 6th Annual Youth Literary Competition, highlighting the best in short stories and poetry by students enrolled in K-12 programs from across York County, SC. The postmark deadline for entries is Friday, September 1, 2017.

The annual Literary Competitions include two categories - short story and poetry. Each category will be judged independently. Authors may enter both the short story and the poetry competition, and entries are eligible to win an award in each competition, however, there will be no repeat prizewinners within the categories. The winners of the 6th Annual Youth Literary Competition will be awarded certificates of achievement.

Awards for the 14th Annual Literary Competition:

There are no restrictions on subject matter. All participants must submit six printed copies of each entry and an electronic copy of each work. Electronic copies may be submitted by email, on a thumb drive, or on a CD/DVD. In November 2017, the winning submissions will be published in the Cotton Alley Writers’ Review, an online literary magazine published annually by the Arts Council of York County on Issuu.com. Winning entries that have not been submitted electronically in advance will not be published in the magazine. For complete guidelines and entry information, please visit yorkcountyarts.org.

Entry fees for the adult competition are: Non-members: $15 per entry; ACYC members: $10 per entry. There are no entry fees for those entering the youth competition. The Perihelion Book Club has underwritten prizes and awards.

The Perihelion Book Club, as a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, began in 1898 as a literary and social club in Rock Hill. Over the years, club members, individually and as a club, have supported literacy in the community in a variety of ways - by conducting story hour at elementary schools, purchasing books for school libraries and funding a scholarship at Winthrop University. Today its members continue to share their love of literature with each other and to eagerly support literacy efforts in the community by raising funds at an auction held annually at its December meeting. The Perihelion Book Club is very proud to encourage writers of short stories and poetry by funding prizes for this competition.

All participants are invited to a free, public reception and awards ceremony to be held at the Center for the Arts, 121 East Main Street, Rock Hill, SC on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 6 PM where the winners will be announced. Winners are encouraged to read passages from their work at the reception.
